Kuguno Town and Its Jōmon Heritage
Hida Kaido Nagisa is located in Kuguno Town, an area known for its highland landscapes at the foot of the Northern Alps and its connection to the Jōmon period. The nearby Dōno-ue archaeological site provides a link to the region’s prehistoric past.
The roadside station’s architecture takes inspiration from traditional Jōmon pit dwellings, reinterpreted in a contemporary style. Inside, visitors will find a fresh-produce market, a bakery selling freshly baked bread, a gelato counter, a souvenir shop, and a food-processing facility that can be viewed by visitors.
A Showcase of Local Specialties
Hida Kaido Nagisa was established with the aim of making better use of Kuguno Town’s local specialties. Apples are among the area’s best-known agricultural products, and visitors can discover a variety of cultivars suited to different tastes.
Apples are used in numerous products sold at the station, including gelato, juice, and sweets. The winter-only apple pie is particularly popular and should be reserved in advance. Local orchard growers’ wives make each pie by hand, filling it generously with apples. Its substantial weight reflects the generous amount of fruit inside.
Apple-Based Products and Freshly Bottled Juices
The shop offers a wide range of processed products made with apples grown in Kuguno Town. One popular souvenir is Ringo no Genkotsu, an apple-based confection made by Uchiboya, a confectionery producer in Takayama City.
Other distinctive products include miso for cooking with hōba leaves that incorporates apples, as well as apple yokan, a traditional Japanese jelly-like sweet. These unusual creations offer new ways to enjoy the area’s signature fruit.
The premises also have a juice-processing facility where tomatoes, apples, and peaches are made into bottled juice. The products are available in two sizes: one liter and 180 milliliters. Visitors can purchase them at the roadside station’s shop.
Seasonal Fruits and Vegetables from Local Farms
The produce market stocks fresh highland vegetables, fruit, and shiitake mushrooms supplied by local farmers. The selection changes throughout the year, reflecting the area’s climate and harvest seasons.
Spring brings wild mountain vegetables, bracken fern, and tara shoots, as well as koshiabura, a prized edible tree shoot popular in Japanese spring cooking. Summer offerings include cherries, blueberries, peaches, tomatoes, and sweet corn.
In autumn, visitors can find apples, pears, Chinese cabbage, red turnips, and daikon radishes. Winter brings products such as soybeans, perilla seeds, and adzuki beans. Shiitake mushrooms are available throughout the year, and their generous size and reasonable prices are often a pleasant surprise for shoppers.
Freshly Baked Bread and Homemade Gelato
The aroma of freshly baked bread is one of the highlights of Hida Kaido Nagisa. The bakery makes bread every day using fruit and vegetables grown in Kuguno Town, offering approximately 10 to 15 varieties.
The bakery is particularly popular around lunchtime, when queues may form. Some varieties sell out by the afternoon, so visitors hoping to choose from the full selection may wish to arrive early.
Next to the bakery, the gelato counter serves frozen desserts made with locally grown fruit. Flavors may include peach, apple, and pumpkin. During harvest seasons, fruit may also be prepared as a compote and incorporated into gelato, allowing visitors to enjoy seasonal ingredients in a refreshing form.
Fresh Juice and Regional Cuisine
Juices made from fruit and vegetables grown in Kuguno Town are another specialty. Local women prepare these drinks by hand, producing 100% juice that highlights the natural flavors of the fresh ingredients.
The station’s restaurant also serves dishes inspired by regional ingredients and food traditions. Options include healthy Jōmon udon, medicinal-style Chinese cuisine, and ayu meshi, rice cooked with sweetfish, a freshwater fish prized in Japan.
These dishes give visitors an opportunity to enjoy the flavors of Hida while taking a break during their journey through the mountains.
Enjoy the Hida River and Its Natural Surroundings
The Hida River flows behind Roadside Station Hida Kaido Nagisa, adding to the area’s peaceful natural atmosphere. A riverside walking path allows visitors to enjoy a leisurely stroll while listening to the sound of flowing water.
Crossing the nearby bridge leads to a tourist fishing weir, where visitors can experience aspects of the region’s traditional river culture. During summer, activities such as catching char may also be available, offering another way to enjoy the surrounding natural environment.
