It is one of the largest freshwater aquariums in the world. Here, visitors are introduced to river ecosystems from around the world, beginning with the headwaters of the Nagara River.
The four-story building houses more than 22,000 living creatures and plants of about 250 species and features detailed habitats not only for fish, but also for reptiles, amphibians, birds, and a wide variety of other aquatic creatures.
The world’s largest freshwater fish, such as the Mekong giant catfish and pirarucu, are on display, as well as mammals such as the kotome otter and capybara.
A special annual passport can also be purchased for the price of two admissions.
Furthermore, the aquarium is located next to the Kawashima PA/Highway Oasis on the Tokai-Hokuriku Expressway, allowing visitors to park their cars at the Highway Oasis and walk to the aquarium.
