Monet's Pond

A beauty reminiscent of French painter Monet’s “Water Lilies

This nameless pond is located near Nemichi Shrine in Itadori, Seki-shi, Gifu Prefecture. The pond is called “Monet’s Pond” because the water lilies floating on the surface of the pond filled with crystal clear blue water look like those in French painter Claude Monet’s famous painting “Waterlilies” and became a topic of conversation on social networking sites. The spring water from the mountain is highly transparent and changes from deep blue to clear depending on the light. The water is crystal clear and changes to deep blue or clear depending on the light, creating a mysterious scene when combined with the colorful carp swimming leisurely among the water lilies. The best time to visit is from late May to July, when the water lilies are in bloom. The autumn foliage season, when the trees around the pond turn red, is also a great time to visit.
