Gero Onsen Travel Guides

The Gero area is located in the central part of Gifu Prefecture and is home to numerous attractive spots. Among the best known of these are the Morimizunashi Hachiman Shrine, where the "Tanokami Festival (Hanagasa Festival)" is held, and the Nebo Waterfalls, which are highly regarded throughout Japan.

The Gero area is famous for Gero Onsen, one of the three best hot springs in Japan, which dates back about 1,000 years. The source of the hot spring is located near the summit of Yugamine, and boasts a flow of 1,250 liters of water per minute.

The hot spring is believed to be beneficial for musculoskeletal disorders, rheumatism, nerve palsy, recovery from illness, and fatigue, as well as for beauty because of the hydrogen sulfide it contains.

There is also a hot spring in the Gero area called Norimasa Onsen, which is said to be effective for joint pain and chronic digestive diseases. This hot spring is also popular with many spa healers.

In the Gero area, visitors can enjoy not only the hot springs, but also the local cuisine. The area's famous traditional dishes include hoba-zushi and nezushi.

Hoba-zushi is a local home-style dish consisting of vinegared trout, chopped myoga, bamboo shoots, and wild vegetables mixed with rice and wrapped in hoba leaves. Nezushi is a traditional dish essential for New Year's, and is a fermented mixture of rice, trout, carrots, radish, and rice malt.

The Gero area attracts many tourists and hot-spring cures throughout the year, who enjoy the local cuisine along with the hot springs.
