Gero Onsen Gassho-mura (Gero Onsen Gassho Village) is a museum consisting of 10 gassho-zukuri buildings that were relocated from Shirakawa-go and other areas, including the “Former Oto Family Residence,” a nationally designated Important Tangible Folk Cultural Property. In the village, visitors can tour the interior of the gassho-zukuri, try their hand at pottery making and washi papermaking, visit the Shirasagi-za, Japan’s only permanent shadow play theater, the Komainu Museum with a collection of komainu (guardian dogs) from around the world, and the Saijiki-no-mori, a forest that recreates a nostalgic satoyama of the old days.
